Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Left Elbow Fractures

SKU: C17008

This exhibit depicts the open reduction and internal fixation of a comminuted left distal humerus fracture. An incision is made over the posterior elbow, incorporating a 3mm puncture wound. The cubital tunnel is then released, and the ulnar nerve is transposed anteriorly. An osteotomy is made in the proximal ulna, allowing the olecranon and triceps tendon to be reflected superiorly. The exposed fracture fragments are reduced and temporarily secured in place with K-wires. Metal humeral plates are then affixed medially and laterally with screws. Lastly, the olecranon osteotomy is repaired with two K-wires and a tension band. Post-operative radiation therapy was used to prevent any heterotopic ossification around the fracture site.
